Why Expositional Preaching? [Thursday Theology]

Why don't I just pick a sermon text each week and preach whatever I like? Well, sometimes I do, because that is what is called for, but the regular diet of the church is exposition, verse-by-verse travel through a book of the Bible, making every effort to keep the meaning of the text as the point of the sermon.
